Creative Scotland hire impresses with ‘empathy for artists’
BEN TORRIE has been named Creative Scotland’s head of theatre, moving from Aberdeen Performing Arts, where he spent 18 years, including 12 years as director of programming and creative projects.
As a theatre programmer, Torrie has overseen the curation of productions at His Majesty’s Theatre, the Lemon Tree, and the Music Hall, as well as holding board roles with the Federation of Scottish Theatre, Lyth Arts Centre, Manipulate Arts, and as co-chair of Culture Aberdeen.
“Through the recruitment process, we were particularly struck by Ben’s detailed understanding of Scottish theatre and his empathy with artists working across the country,” said interim director of arts at Creative Scotland, PAUL BURNS.
“I’m looking forward to working with him to support the diverse range of work being made in Scotland to flourish.”
Torrie begins his role in January 2026, taking over from LAURA MACKENZIE-STUART, who will become the new head of international, in a job share alongside LORNA DUGUID.
Speaking on his appointment, Torrie said he was “absolutely delighted” to be joining the arts funding body.
“Scotland has a rich and vital theatre sector with huge talent and potential,” he said, adding, “I am very much looking forward to collaborating with colleagues from all parts of the industry to collectively embrace the opportunities and challenges of the coming years.”
