Concert venue welcomes former Historic England boss to board ahead of major revamp
Sinfonia Smith Square has appointed DUNCAN WILSON as trustee as the venue undertakes a major capital refurbishment project of its Grade I-listed Smith Square Hall, which is currently on Historic England’s Heritage at Risk Register.
Until recently, Wilson was chief executive of Historic England, a post he held from its inception in 2015 until his retirement in October 2025.
He is also a qualified chartered accountant and has a background in archaeology.
Chair of the board Dr TRACY LONG said she was “thrilled” by Wilson’s appointment, noting that he brings “a passion for the arts and experiences” that will be “vital” to the evolution of Sinfonia Smith Square’s role.
Through Doors Open, Sinfonia Smith Square aims not only to overhaul the hall’s condition and improve public access but also create new opportunities for learning, participation, and skills development.
Wilson added, “I am delighted to be joining the board at this pivotal moment. My love of classical architecture and music, and my experience restoring major historic buildings, will, I hope, allow me to make a meaningful contribution.
“I am particularly impressed by the commitment to developing talent and giving opportunities to gifted young musicians at a formative stage in their careers.”
