Arts Council leader Andrew Miller departs funding body
Disability advocate ANDREW MILLER is to step down from his role as chair of Arts Council England’s Disability Advisory Committee.
Miller, who received an MBE in 2021 for services to disabled people in the creative industries, will depart ACE and his position as a National Council member at the organisation, having accepted the role in 2017.
Beginning his more than 35-year-long career in broadcasting, Miller has worked in creative sub-sectors including theatre, film, and television.
He has worked as an executive associate at Royal and Derngate Theatres, as creative director at Trinity College Oxford, and co-founded the UK Disability Arts Alliance #WeShallNotBeRemoved.
In a feature reflecting on his experience at ACE for Arts Professional, Miller said: “When I was appointed by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport to the National Council of Arts Council England (ACE) in 2017 there really wasn’t much of a discussion in the arts sector about disability or the ableism most disabled creatives like me experienced on a daily basis.”
The sector leader named “considerable strides” made by the creative industries on inclusivity for artists, audiences, and employees, but warned the work was far from over, adding: “That’s not to say a magic wand has been waved to banish discrimination and under-representation.”
