Arts and Festival Manager, Bournemouth Arts by the Sea Festival (2010 – Present day)
I set up a new multi-artform festival, Bournemouth Arts by the Sea Festival, for Bournemouth Borough Council. Now in its third year, this runs from mid-September to mid-October, with theatre, dance, film, visual arts and a free opening weekend. I developed a new vision for the Borough’s visual arts provision, including the festival and a year-round arts programme. This included rebranding the arts department, creating a separate identity and profile, and raising new funds to support the programme.

Director, United Gallery (1997-2010)
I left the Arts Council to take up post of Director of Untitled Gallery in Sheffield. I led the organisation through a period of transformation including a major capital build, staff restructure and re-visioning. The organisation was renamed Site Gallery in 1997 and I launched the new organisation as part of the Year of Photography and the Electronic Image in 1998, for which I was lead member for planning and delivery. I curated the programme, managed an international residency programme and set-up a visual arts business support scheme funded through EU funds. As Director of Site Gallery for a further 12 years, I led on the development of a new visual arts festival in Sheffield, Art Sheffield, as part of Sheffield Contemporary Arts Forum. The first festival was held in 2003.

Arts Officer, ACE, East Midlands (1987-1997)
I started working for the Arts Council at East Midlands Arts as a part-time Arts Officer, continued to lecture and also began working at Loughborough College of Art and Design, running the visual document library providing visual documentation for the College. I was offered a full-time post at East Midlands Arts and later became Head of Department for Visual Arts, Film and Literature at East Midlands Arts.

Lecturer (1981-1985)
I completed my MPhil and continued to lecture at universities across the country. I became interested in working in the museum and art gallery sector and began volunteering to learn more about working in the arts. I volunteered at Nottingham Castle Museum, Newstead Abbey and at artists’ studios in Nottingham.

Student (1978-1981)
I was a student at Manchester Polytechnic (Manchester Metropolitan University) and studied History of Art and Design.  I received 1st class honours and was offered a three-year research post at Wolverhampton Polytechnic. Whilst studying for my MPhil, I began to lecture at universities in the Midlands and Yorkshire.

Student (1976-1978)
I studied at Croydon College of Art to complete A-levels and a Foundation Course where I met Bruce McLean, an inspirational tutor.
