Monday This time last year my life was about to change. It started here at Leroy House in Islington, where the sky is always this blue (metaphorically true), and I had an interview with Candoco. After 10 years in the advertising industry, I decided I had to return to my first love – dance – and fortunately Candoco said they would have me. Goodbye business class travel and fancy coffee machines, hello Digestive biscuits, lots of tea and the most incredible creative work I have ever been involved with.
Tuesday One of my favourite things about my job is getting to know our youth company. We have a Monday group and Tuesday group, both of which perform as Cando2. At the moment they are busy making new work for our Candoco Cabaret. The more our youth company grows, the more work there is for me! This week I was just taking photos for social media but on other occasions, we might be making an insight film or promotional trailer for a piece they are working on.
Wednesday This is where you will find me most days: phone in one hand, mouse (or biscuit) in the other. I manage our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram feeds, as well as the website. Generally, we have lots to talk about, from international touring to rehearsals and new commissions, but sometimes I have to get creative and hunt out a story. This is probably one of my favourite parts of my job; journalist for the day, I get to draw out the opinions and industry experiences of our dancers and choreographers for our fans!
Thursday Right now we are planning Candoco’s Late Night Spectacular at Wellcome Collection, a museum takeover with roaming dance performances and innovative sound experiences. Candoco Producer Marianne Mogendorff and I are there almost every week, meticulously planning a range of other talks and activities with Wellcome’s amazing team. From marketing copy and programme layout to signage and social media engagement, this is where many years working on branded pop-ups and events come in especially handy.
Saturday Devon for the weekend - green fields, almost blue sky and the worst 4G connection. While I schedule some social media posts in advance, I like our feeds to be as ‘live’ as possible so I want to be on hand to share what’s going on when our dancers are working at the weekend. It’s not always easy but this is my other favourite thing about my job: it doesn’t feel like work. It’s challenging, exciting, rewarding -- business class was nice, but the bus suits me much better.
