Professor DEBORAH SWALLOW is retiring as Märit Rausing Director of the Courtauld Institute of Art.

During her 18-year tenure, Swallow oversaw £57m redevelopment project Courtauld Connects, which is transforming the Courtauld’s home at Somerset House.

The gallery reopened to the public in November, with work to improve the university’s campus facilities ongoing.

Earlier this year, Swallow secured a landmark 10-year strategic relationship with King's College, London.

“It’s been a huge honour to play a part in shaping this unique organisation’s development,” Swallow said.

“I have been challenged, inspired and energised by my Courtauld colleagues, by our students and alumni and by colleagues across the university.”

The Courtauld’s Governing Board plans to undertake an international search for a new director, with Professor Swallow expected to continue in post until a successful candidate is found.
