GREGORY DORAN, Artistic Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company, is leaving the role.

He begins rehearsals for the title role of Richard III next week and will remain Artistic Director Emeritus until the end of 2023, leading a production that year - his 50th with the company.

He's spent 35 years at the RSC: "It has been a real privilege to be a part of the amazing team leading this great company for this last decade of challenge and achievement," he said.

"We have made many strides in making our theatre more inclusive, accessible, diverse and accountable, but there is always more to do and I wish whoever succeeds me joy in continuing that work."

Doran received the Sam Wannamaker Award for Shakespearean theatre in 2012 and delivered the Richard Dimbleby Lecture on the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death in 2016.

RSC's board will begin the search for his replacement from next week, with Acting Artistic Director ERICA WHYMAN continuing in the role in the interim.
