Simon Patterson and Adham Faramawy (l-r)
(l-r) Simon Patterson and Adham Faramawy join the board of the Design and Artists Copyright Society

The artists ADHAM FARAMAWY and SIMON PATTERSON have been selected as new board members for DACS (Design and Artists Copyright Society). The rights management organisation for UK visual artists has also reappointed JANETTE PARRIS to the board.

An artist working across media, Faramawy has screened and exhibited at the Guggenheim Museum, New York, Tate Modern and Tate Britain, the Serpentine Gallery and Somerset House. They are a lecturer in fine art at Goldsmiths and Oxford universities and a member of the Royal Academy Schools Committee.

Nominated for the Turner prize in 1996, Patterson has exhibited at museums including the Museum of Modern Art, Kunsthaus Zurich, Tate Britain, Tate Liverpool and Tate Modern. Patterson said he had applied to become a board member after becoming increasingly aware that the impact of artists' copyright is “far-reaching and little understood”.

Parris has exhibited her work for 25 years, including at TATE, ICA, Kunsthaus Zürich, Hayward Gallery Touring, Art on the Underground and the Royal Academy of Arts. She is also the founder of Arch, an established comic exhibited in the British Library’s Comics Unmasked in 2014.

In 2022, DACS distributed £16.4m in royalties to 82,000 artists and estates through its services with members including Sonia Boyce, Tracey Emin, Sir Peter Blake, Damien Hirst, Yinka Shonibare and the Andy Warhol Foundation.

Parris said she was “delighted” to be reappointed, while Faramawy noted that joining the board was “a privilege and a responsibility.” They added that they hoped to be “a voice for fellow artists and to champion their rights to ensure they receive the recognition and support they deserve.”
