Chief Executive of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO) STEPHEN MADDOCK is to step down after 23 years in post.

He will depart in April next year to become Principal of the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire.

As Chief Executive, Maddock has been responsible for all CBSO's activities and choruses, as well as its youth orchestra, learning programme and administrative and rehearsal home, the CBSO Centre.

The CBSO has undertaken 77 tours in 34 countries during Maddock’s tenure, alongside launching initiatives including the SO Vocal, a free community choir that encourages music participation among local people of all ages.

Maddock has also served on a range of local and national boards such as Culture Central, Marketing Birmingham and the Association of British Orchestras. In 2017, he was awarded an OBE for Services to Music, particularly in the West Midlands.

DAVID BURBIDGE CBE, Chair of the Board of Trustees, says: "We have an enormous debt to Stephen for his outstanding leadership of the CBSO over many years and we are sorry to lose him. During his time at the CBSO, the orchestra has enhanced its position as being among the very best in the world."

Burbidge will continue as Chairman for an extra year to ensure a smooth transition for the CBSO.

Maddock called his two decades spent at BSCO "an immense privilege".

"I am very proud of everything that the CBSO family has achieved during this time and will watch with interest as they continue to develop and inspire people with great music in the coming years."
