The London Library has announced HELENA BONHAM CARTER as its President.
A member of the library since 1986, Bonham Carter takes over as president from Sir TIM RICE, who spent five years in post.
A renowned actress, Bonham Carter first rose to prominence through her role in the film adaptation of the novel A Room with a View, written by former Library Vice President E M FORSTER. She played Miss Havisham in Great Expectations by Charles Dickens who was one of the library's founding members.
As president, her priorities will include fundraising and advocacy work. The library has said she is particularly interested in its Emerging Writers Programme and its growing schools programme.
Bonham Carter said she is delighted to become the library’s first female president: “The library’s unique resources, history and membership help to connect the literary greats of the past with those of the future, and I am proud to support this incredible and vital establishment.”
