50th anniversary

National Music Council, established 1953

e: nationalmusiccouncil@ukonline.co.uk

How it all began?

The National Music Council of Great Britain (NMC) was established in 1953 by the Government of the day. Its prime function was to be a member of the International Music Council, an affiliated body of UNESCO, and thereby represent British music to the world.

Pivotal moments

- 1972 ? published the first Music Yearbook, a successful annual publication for several years; and established Local Authority Music Awards which have since become the Education Awards.

- 1996 ? published The Value of Music, the first of three research reports describing the contribution of the music industry to the UK?s economy.

The organisation today

Led by Chairman, Robin Osterley, NMC is active in establishing a Creative and Cultural Industries Sector Skills Council. 2003 saw publication of Sounding Out the Future ? research about music industry key skills, education and training. NMC is currently exploring better ways of working collaboratively and strategically with the Music Education Council and Music Business Forum.

A big thank you to?

Past Chairmen James Archibald, a music filmmaker; Bob Montgomery, who raised core funding to enable the organisation to grow during the 1980s; and Russell Jones, Chairman in the 1990s, who oversaw the production of two economic research reports and the creation of a strategic plan 2000/2003.
