Letters – Absent youth

With regard to the letter ‘Age Concern’ (ArtsProfessional, issue 61, November 3), I would like to correct some inaccuracies which misrepresent the recent decibel performing arts showcase and the decibel project.

The remit of decibel is very specific – to support the work of Black and Asian-led companies and individuals. In putting together the showcase, all Black and Asian-led companies were encouraged to put forward work for inclusion. It is unfortunate, and indeed a statement on the current landscape, that no companies producing venue-touring work for young people came forward. With cultural diversity and young people as the focus for two of Arts Council England’s ‘Ambitions for the Arts’, I would agree that it is a shame that we were unable to promote a Black-led company that addressed these two issues. However, with an on-going commitment to supporting culturally diverse practitioners, perhaps companies will emerge in future who will produce theatre for a deserving young audience.
