JUDITH WEIR will become the first female Master of the Queen’s Music when she succeeds PETER MAXWELL-DAVIES. The Scottish-born composer has been Resident Composer with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and has written music for the Boston Symphony and BBC Symphony orchestras. Past holders of the title, described by Buckingham Palace as "the musical equivalent of poet laureate", include Edward Elgar.
