Model skeletons, cubed earwax and mentoring young writers – all in a week’s work for Ministry of Stories’ Oz Yikici. Oz Yikici – Volunteer and Administration Coordinator, Ministry of StoriesSwipe / click to begin MondayMondays are my main admin day, so I pick somewhere to sit in our workshop space. My mornings tend to revolve around updating our database and responding to all our newly registered volunteers. I also have a one-to-one with my line manager today, which is a great time to chat about what’s been happening and what I need to work towards this week. Yuet, our admin volunteer is also in and she helps me with admin preparation for our volunteer induction. TuesdayTuesdays are when we have our team meetings – it’s the day when most of us are in. This week Thea, our Marketing Coordinator, is talking to us about the marketing calendar and what to expect over the coming year. Following that, we discuss the newest addition to our shop: a model skeleton donated to us by St Leonard’s Hospital. I spend the afternoon finishing off my update for our quarterly board report. WednesdayOn Wednesdays I’m on shop cover in our fantastic shop: Hoxton Street Monster Supplies (HSMS). This is the day I get to be playful as I greet our human (and monster) customers. HSMS acts as both a source of income for the charity and an inspirational space for our young writers. You can buy all sorts of monster essentials in store, including cubed earwax. Today Rosie, one of our regular volunteers, joins me. We’re preparing our slime lollipops with utmost care. ThursdayToday I’m working through some volunteering stats for our corporate partners Penguin Random House. This involves running various reports on our Salesforce database and updating the working spreadsheet – not the most exciting of tasks, but it helps us keep on track with our volunteer targets. Hard work always gets rewarded with some fun at the Ministry though, and this afternoon I get to do some mentoring with our young writers in the Thursday after-school club. FridayThe last Friday of each month is our volunteer induction day and before this month’s, I need to make some improvements to the presentation. Armed with a cuppa, I’m going over the notes from a recent meeting and making the agreed adjustments. Induction days see 30 potential new volunteers come through our doors. It’s always an exciting and nerve-racking day for me, so I strive to get it right.
