Lord NEIL MENDOZA has been named Chair of Historic England by Culture Secretary LUCY FRAZER.
He takes up post on 1 September for a term of four years.
A businessman and member of the House of Lords, Mendoza was appointed DCMS’s Commissioner for Culture Recovery and Renewal in 2020.
He played a key role in the creation of the Culture Recovery Fund, is a member of its board and chaired the Culture and Heritage Capital board. His tenure as Cultural Commissioner was extended by six months earlier this year.
Mendoza has been Provost of Oriel College Oxford since 2018. Previously, he served as Commissioner of Historic England until 2019, before being appointed as a DCMS non-executive board member.
At present, Mendoza chairs the Illuminated River Foundation, is Civic Future’s Chairman of Trustees and is on the board of Oxford’s Ashmolean Museum.
Mendoza said his appointment at Historic England is a “great honour”.
“England’s historic environment holds deep meaning for people.
“Over the last few years, we have witnessed its impact in regeneration, education and cultural development across the country.
“I look forward to ensuring the ongoing protection of the nation’s heritage estate and demonstrating the importance, beauty and value of our heritage to a wider society.”
