Oxford Playhouse Joint Artistic Director and CEO LOUISE CHANTAL is stepping down after almost eight years in post.

Chantal departs immediately to spend time with her sister, who is seriously ill, and will “take some time off and decide what’s next".

During Chantal’s time at the Playhouse, audience numbers more than doubled and its in-house produced pantomime won a UK Pantomime award. Education and artist development were integrated across the Playhouse’s activities, with teams now working with more than 20,000 young people and 600 artists a year.

Chantal also led a major refurbishment project from 2014-2016, improving the accessibility and sustainability of the theatre.

Interim Chair MOSS COOPER says Chantal made an “extraordinary contribution” during her tenure.

“She has worked hard to expand the range and scope of the Playhouse’s work, ensuring its continuing reputation and high profile, while paying particular attention to supporting young artists and developing the full range of participation and outreach programmes which the Playhouse now offers.”

Chantal played tribute to the Oxford Playhouse team: “Thank you all for the extraordinary support and friendship which has meant that the last eight years have been the best years of my life.”
