JONATHAN WILLIAMS is leaving the British Museum.

In August, Williams agreed to "step back" from his role pending an independent review into thefts at the institution after allegedly dismissing warnings about the stolen and missing artefacts brought to his attention in early 2021.

He was temporarily replaced by Director of Scientific Research at the museum, CARL HERON.

Williams' permanent departure is prompted by the conclusion of an independent review into the 2,000 items found to be missing, stolen or damaged, published Tuesday (12 December).

Williams follows the departure of Director HARTWIG FISCHER, who resigned shortly after the scandal over the stolen artefacts was made public.
