The Director General of Amgueddfa Cymru - Museum Wales, DAVID ANDERSON, plans to step down in August.

Amgueddfa Cymru is a family of seven museums located across Wales.

Anderson began his career as a history teacher before moving into museum education and leadership roles at Brighton's Royal Pavilion and Museums, the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich and the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Since joining Amgueddfa Cymru in 2010, Anderson has developed programmes and research focused on broadening the role of museums in society and launched the group’s Strategy 2030. Under his leadership, St Fagans, the National Museum of History in Wales, became the Art Fund UK Museum of the Year in 2019.

He also led the museums through the pandemic, developing resources to support local hospitals, care homes and community organisations, and established international partnerships with organisations in North and South America and Europe.

From April, David will be an Emeritus Fellow at Amgueddfa Cymru and a Visiting Professor at the School of Governance at Cardiff University.

“Under his leadership, the museum has become the largest provider of learning outside the classroom in Wales and the passion he has demonstrated for cultural democracy will serve Wales well for many years to come,” DR CAROL BELL, Vice-President of Amgueddfa Cymru, said.

Anderson commented: “My twelve years as Director General at Amgueddfa Cymru have been the most rewarding of my professional career.

“I look forward very much to supporting the museum, as a much loved and cherished national institution, in achieving these ambitions, in the years to come.”
