Now in its seventeenth year, Black History Month (BHM) will take place in October. A celebration of black culture, with an eclectic range of arts and cultural events will be held across the UK.

The Drum in Birmingham, Europe’s first arts centre dedicated to developing and promoting African, Asian and Caribbean arts, has re-opened in time for the celebration following a £2.1m refurbishment. Its opening programme will include MOBO nominee Terri Walker (pictured). The Greater London Authority will also stage a series of events including Dub, Sweat & Tears, a multimedia exhibition of the history of black music in Britain since 1950; and the second BHM conference which will be addressed by Mayor Ken Livingstone. Arts Council England’s decibel initiative will launch a visual arts platform to coincide with BHM. The launch will feature a presentation of David A Bailey’s new exhibition, Back to Black, at Watershed, Bristol.
