The fifth annual Refugee Week festival is set to take place across the UK, featuring over 300 public events including music, dance and visual arts from across the world, as well as theatre and film, political debates and food fairs.
In addition to the main programme of events, thousands of activities will be taking place in schools, colleges, universities and youth groups, reflecting this year?s theme of young people. The aim of the week is to celebrate the economic and cultural contribution that refugees and asylum seekers make to the UK, and to promote understanding about the reasons why people seek sanctuary. It is seen as a chance to deliver positive messages that counter fear, ignorance and the negative stereotyping of refugees. Refugee Week events kick off in Birmingham?s Victoria Square on June 14, followed by an official launch on June 15 on the South Bank in London with Celebrating Sanctuary, an afternoon of music and dance acts by professional refugee artists, story-telling for children and a range of food, drink and craft stalls. Events will continue across the country until June 22. w: http://www.refugeeweek.org.uk
