In collaboration with the Royal National Institute for the Blind, Glasgow Film Theatre (GFT) has become the first independent cinema in the UK, and the only venue in Scotland, to pilot the DTS (Digital Theatre System) audio description system.
This new system overcomes many problems associated with older systems as it is linked to timecode, meaning that the description will synchronised with the print. The track is picked up by film-goers from an infra-red system through light-weight headphones. Over the period of the trial GFT will attempt to screen all films that have been described to date, including blockbuster movies that would not normally be screened at the venue. The trial has started with Harry Potter, which will be shown every Saturday throughout March. At the DTS launch were 200 pupils from Darnley Primary School, including fifteen blind and partially sighted children who were amongst the first to make use of this new system.
