One fifth of British parents have not taken part in any cultural activities with their children in the past year, according to independent research by Ipsos MORI for Creativity, Culture & Education (CCE). CCE has highlighted the growing gap in arts access between poor and affluent families. An earlier study similarly revealed that a child’s engagement in arts and culture is dependent on the educational levels of their parents: 60% of children of parents with no qualifications spend less than three hours per week on cultural activities – defined to include reading a book or spending time creatively on the computer. According to the report, a further 20% spend no time at all on cultural activity in a given week.
