Alun Ffred Jones has been appointed Culture and Heritage Minister to the Welsh Assembly, following the resignation of the flamboyant and sociable Rhodri Glyn Thomas, whose achievements include championing the Welsh Language and the Wales Millennium Centre. In his resignation letter to First Minister Rhodri Morgan he wrote that “in the light of the publicity that has been following me in the last weeks I feel that my position in the Government is no longer sustainable”. A Member of the Welsh Assembly since its inception in 1999, he has been guilty of a number of gaffes recently, including announcing the wrong person as winner of the Welsh Book of the Year, and walking into a pub with a lit cigar in contravention of the smoking ban. His successor, the Assembly Member for the Arfon constituency, is a former Welsh teacher, journalist and television director.
