Draft budget proposals call for a £60k cut to the cost of stewards.

Cardiff Council is considering cost-cutting proposals to reduce the number of stewards employed at New Theatre and St David’s Hall by filling some roles with volunteers. The roles under threat are those of stewards who undertake meet and greet duties including showing audience to seats, but not cash-handling. Draft budget proposals would see the £180k currently spent on employing 80 stewards across the two venues being cut by £60k over 2013/14. However, the Council has said that no compulsory redundancies will be made as employee numbers will be reduced by natural wastage: staff turnover for these roles is high due to the number of students and other casual workers who fill these positions.  A Council spokesperson told AP: “Similar front of house schemes have operated successfully in other large scale venues across the UK and by not employing new staff, the venues will save on expenditure.” The Cardiff budget will be finalised when the full Council meets on 28 February.
