A leaflet and publicity campaign to recruit potential arts board members from under-represented groups, particularly women, will be launched this summer by the DCMS. The government has set a target of achieving a 50% representation of women on the boards of non-departmental bodies within its remit, following research showing that while 60% of graduates in the arts and creative industries and two thirds of the arts work force are female, women make up only 31% at chief executive level and above. The DCMS is responsible for appointing members to 70 boards, including the BBC, the Royal Opera House, the UK Film Council, and the Victoria and Albert Museum. The British Library’s board is 58% female, while bodies including the National Portrait Gallery (47%) and the big Lottery Fund (45%) are very close to hitting the target.
