A new study is investigating the potential demand for and feasibility of creating affordable, purpose-built artists’ studios as part of the Royal Opera House (ROH) Production Park on a 14-acre site in Thurrock, Essex. The studios would stand alongside the ROH’s new set and scenery workshops and the National Skills Academy for Creative & Cultural Skills. Outline planning permission has already been granted for a three-storey building. England’s leading studio development charity, London-based Acme Studios, is managing the study and working with architects to develop outline designs which will generate a total of 17,500 square feet of studio space. All units will have the flexibility to function either as private studios, short-term commissioning/project spaces or as public spaces for exhibitions or events. If the project goes ahead it is proposed that the studios would be made available to artists to rent for an initial maximum period of seven years, and artists working in fine art practice will be eligible to apply for space. Work on the project is planned to begin in 2011/12
