£140k has been raised from the sale of four donated paintings for a new fund to support emerging international artists who due to their location, culture or environment have not always had the opportunity to create new work. The Commissions and Exhibitions Fund, run by the Institute of International and Visual Arts, will start its work later this year, aiming to offer creative freedom, curatorial support and profile to emerging artists, by commissioning and presenting their work to give them wider public recognition. The donated paintings by artists Yinka Shonibare, Mona Hatoum, Peter Randall-Page and David Adjaye were in Sotheby’s Contemporary Day Sale, with Shonibare’s Boy on Globe selling for £109k, despite an estimate of just £70k.
