A photo of Aldwych Theatre in London

Theatre-goers pouring out of hit shows in London’s West End can hardly be aware that the London Assembly’s Economic Development, Culture, Sport and Tourism Committee is considering how to tackle long-term under-investment in theatre buildings.

‘Restoration Drama’, a new report presented to the Assembly, offers a range of options for ensuring Theatreland’s future. The investigation looked at all 40 commercial theatres in the West End, including the Aldwych (pictured). It calls for theatres to create a “clear, timed programme” of action and to “explore all possible solutions to securing investment”, which could include a restoration levy on tickets, producer investment and corporate sponsorship.
