Derby QUAD. Photo: FCB Studios

A new centre for art and film, including an art gallery, two cinemas and the BFI Mediatheque, will open later this month in Derby. QUAD (pictured) was formed when two Derby-based arts organisations, Q Arts and Metro Cinema, joined forces with Derby City Council to create a cultural partnership.

QUAD will also offer workshop spaces for community arts activities, a film-editing suite and digital lab. QUAD will be launched with a celebratory weekend of events called ‘Derby Festé 08’, including ‘Insects’ by the Barcelona-based theatre company Sarruga, a parade of Giants made by groups in the city and a large-scale fire sculpture by Denis Tricot. The opening week will also see taster events allowing the public the opportunity to try out the new facilities. QUAD’s ambition is to become “an organisation and building that is of local, national and international significance, striving to best serve the needs of the people of Derby and the region”.
