Playwrights and human rights
Play scripts exploring human rights issues are being sought by theatre company iceandfire and Amnesty International UK. ‘Everyone has the Right’ is a free, open programme, accepting scripts on a rolling basis. Following the ‘Protect the Human’ playwriting competition in 2007, Amnesty and iceandfire found it difficult to build relationships with promising writers, because the emphasis was on finding winners, not developing work. Everyone has the Right aims to address this. Writers are invited to submit scripts, and the iceandfire team will provide feedback on the effectiveness of the play in terms of theatricality, dialogue, characterisation, and the extent to which fulfils the brief of exploring a human rights story. The best plays will receive professional rehearsed readings at Amnesty International UK’s Human Rights Action Centre or a partner theatre, with the aim of turning the work into a full production.
