A ‘Great Exhibition’ in the East Midlands, a celebration of the Paralympic movement in the South East and a range of ‘Big Dance’ activities in London are among projects to be funded from the Legacy Trust. The Trust was endowed with £40m in November 2007, with a mission to “support a wide range of innovative cultural and sporting activities for all, which celebrate the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games”. The initial outlay of £13.4m will fund a number of sporting and cultural projects, including a scheme to boost volunteering and develop career options in the East of England and a series of projects in Wales including visual arts activities and a programme to boost disabled young people’s participation in music and performance. Dugald Mackie, Chair of Legacy Trust UK, said that the 2012 Olympics “will be a once in a lifetime opportunity to showcase Britain and to inspire generations of young people”, and that the funded projects would “encourage people throughout the UK to take part in cultural and sporting events, and will help leave a lasting legacy”. Projects which bring together arts and sports organisations include a new network in the South East bringing people together to share ideas and to seek out links between sports and art, focusing on circus, carnival and street arts. Universities in the South West will also be working with arts and sports organisations to offer young people access to their sports clubs and arts facilities.
