A programme led by Hampstead Theatre is working to combat isolation in the London Borough of Camden.

According to research conducted last year, over a third of adults in Camden said they feel lonely some of the time, often, or always, which was higher than in any other borough.

Hampstead Theatre’s participatory-based programme is aimed at adults at risk of loneliness and social isolation.

Offering opportunities to make, explore and watch theatre, the programme includes regular community nights featuring a relaxed space for groups to engage with the theatre through tours, social events and tickets to shows.

Jennifer Davies, Hampstead Theatre’s participation director, says the theatre has been working with organisations including Age UK Camden, the Winch and Wac Arts to find a way to bring people together.

“So far, we’ve welcomed 350 people to take part in writing and performance sessions or to see a show at the theatre and have seen first-hand the hugely positive effect that creativity and making connections can have on individuals and communities,” Davies added.

The programme is also supported by Camden Council. Councillor Anna Burrage commented that it brings together individuals from diverse backgrounds to work with dedicated professionals and fosters a sense of community and creativity.

“The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive,” Burrage said.
