An evaluation of a programme designed to address challenges in recruiting people of colour into theatre leadership positions found that some organisations “fail to recognise” their need to change and to offer more effective support to people of colour if they are to further progress their careers.

The Artistic Director Leadership Programme comprised a leadership training programme for 28 experienced practitioners and two-year paid trainee artistic director residencies for four artists.

The evaluation suggested that Arts Council England, the project’s main funder, should consider tracking participants’ progress at different points over the next decade to give an indication of the scheme’s impact.
