A total of 61 projects supporting young people’s access to music education and industry opportunities across Scotland are receiving a share of £1.73m.

The investment is being delivered through Creative Scotland’s Youth Music Initiative’s YMI.

This year funding will go to 11 projects receiving investment for the first time. According to a statement from Creative Scotland, the projects will support nearly 10,000 children and young people.

The YMI delivers funding to both school-based music-making projects and activities in the informal music sector arranged by organisations and individuals.

As part of Scotland’s most recent budget, the government increased its annual investment in the programme to £9.78m.

Creative Scotland’s YMI manager, Morag Macdonald, said the initiative helps young people develop their musical talents, gain industry insights, and engage in meaningful creative experiences.

“These projects are not just about learning music; they’re about igniting passion, fostering creativity, and building a community where every young person can find their unique musical voice,” Macdonald added.

In January, it was revealed Creative Scotland is planning an independent review into the YMI to determine whether it meets the needs of young people, the culture sector and wider policy areas.
