Reopening of Carlisle museum suffers further delays
The reopening of Cumbria’s largest museum and art gallery has been delayed for a fourth time.
Carlisle’s Tullie House closed in December 2023 for redevelopment works. It was initially scheduled to reopen fully last summer, before the date was postponed to autumn and then pushed back to mid-February 2025.
The News & Star reports that as the February date nears closer, work on new spaces at the museum, including the ground-floor gallery, café and shop, have been delayed again.
One anonymous volunteer called the redevelopment project a “shambles”, adding that “comments about the project have largely gone unheeded with the result that many have become disillusioned and dispirited”.
“This will now be the fourth revision of the opening but surely someone must be accountable for this debacle,” the volunteer added.
Tullie House director Andrew MacKay said redevelopment work is “complex and has overrun” but “is being professionally managed”.
He added that, with the exception of the new spaces, the museum and gallery reopened to the public in November and “continue[s] to offer a high-quality experience for the people that live in and visit Carlisle and Cumbria”.
