Project re-examines participation and cultural value

A £1.5m project will look into re-evaluating the relationship between participation and cultural value.  The project will challenge accepted ideas of the creative economy and resulting cultural policy which they believe only consider engagement with traditional cultural institutions, such as museums and galleries, but overlooks activities such as community festivals, hobbies and a range of informal activities.

Funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, the project will be led by the University of Manchester’s Centre for Research on Socio-Cultural Change, working alongside the Universities of Leicester, Exeter and Warwick and leading policy researchers in the cultural sector. It will be supported by 16 national and local partners, including Arts Council England and Creative Scotland.
