A North East-based music charity that works with disadvantaged children has launched a new education programme thanks to a “totally transformative” two-year grant.

Hand Of, which is based in Newcastle, received a Catalyser grant from Youth Music for its new Illuminate programme.

The programme will provide music, arts and education opportunities for children across the region, using music and the arts to help children “fall in love with learning again”.

The children will have the chance to work with professional musicians, artists and film directors.

Ceitidh Mac, one of Hand Of’s workshop leaders and a professional singer and cellist, said: “What we’re doing is about so much more than music and performance.

“It’s about giving young people the confidence and the skills to pursue their ambitions, and to have a chance at building a happy life for themselves.”

This year’s programme will see children put on their own concerts, create art exhibitions, and attend their own film premiere at Newcastle’s Tyneside Cinema.
