The Jerwood Charitable Foundation has launched a new Painting Fellowship (replacing the Jerwood Painting Prize), for “outstanding artists in the first five years of their professional practice”. Three UK-based artists will be selected to receive a bursary of £10,000 and six months of mentoring, prior to a group exhibition of work. The closing date for entries is 24 September. Winners of the Jerwood Drawing Prize will be announced on 28 September.

The European Cultural Foundation is making a final call for applicants to its Collaboration Grants scheme, extending the deadline to 20 September. Funds are available for arts organisations working on transnational cultural projects with partners from different European countries, or different sectors. Innovative, experimental work with technology and projects that make an impact on European cultural policy are particularly encouraged.
The Journal of Arts and Communities has called for submissions on participatory arts, with work to appear in a special edition of the journal next year, produced in partnership with Amnesty International. Academic papers, original articles, case studies and reports of projects in progress to be considered for publication must be submitted by 15 November. Guidelines are available online.

A Minority Ethnic Arts strategy is in the first stages of development by Arts Council Northern Ireland (ACNI) “in recognition of the priorities set out in [the body’s] five year strategy”. ACNI expects to foster a diverse arts programme, build dialogue and promote understanding between local communities, with the hope of tackling inequality and social exclusion. Individuals or groups in Northern Ireland interested in engaging with ACNI, are asked to contact Policy Development Officer, Jacqueline Witherow.
The Beacon Hill Film Project, a scheme working with young people with severe learning disabilities and autism in North Tyneside, has been awarded Best Arts Project in the National Lottery Awards 2010. The cash prize of £2,000 (to spend on the project) was awarded to Beacon Hill ahead of runners-up, Kidz R Us and Streetwise Opera.
A survey investigating current practices in music education and the transition between primary and secondary level has been launched by Musical Bridges, a learning initiative supported by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation. Primary and secondary schools, local authorities/music services and music organisations are being invited to take part.
Musicians of the world unite… against low-cost airlines. Ryanair refused to allow 12-year-old violinist Francesca Rijks take her instrument on board as hand luggage last month, suggesting the family buy an extra ticket for the violin instead – at a cost of £190. The Incorporated Society of Musicians is warning travelling talent to take heed of luggage restrictions when flying with instruments.
An economic impact study into AV10, the third spring bienniale of electronic art, music and film staged in the North East, revealed a £1.7m boost to the regional economy. According to BOP Consulting, the festival attracted 38,161 visitors, an increase of 65% on the 2008 event, contributing nearly £500,000 in new and additional revenue to Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland and Middlesbrough.
In AP224 we reported on the collapse of Seatem Group. To clarify: the Barbican, the Lowry, the Tate and the Royal Academy of Arts are all clients of Enta – a company which was sold by Seatem to Octopus Investments in May 2010.
