The development and delivery of innovative Irish arts and cultural events in Britain is the theme of a new national event organised by the Federation of Irish Societies, the national representative body for the Irish in Britain. The conference will bring together Irish artists and managers to explore how to strengthen their identity as a professional artistic community and capture new audiences. It will also mark the launch of the Federation of Irish Societies Cultural Strategy in advance of the London Olympics 2012: the organisation is working in partnership with the UK Centre for Carnival Arts to build connections between Irish parades, festivals and events and carnival activity.

Insights into participation in the arts by more than 100 arts groups and experts in the US, UK and Australia have been gathered in a report which presents a new model for understanding levels of arts engagement. Commissioned by the James Irvine Foundation and conducted by US consultants WolfBrown, it also looks at the relationship between participation and attendance, and gives examples of how arts organisations are creating new opportunities for active participation.
Homeless people will be given an official platform as part of the London 2012 Festival celebrations: Streetwise Opera will be presenting an Open Mic Showcase, ‘With One Voice’, to present the work of homeless people, who will take 5–10 minute slots throughout the day to sing, present drama work and poetry, and screen films. Established arts groups working with homeless people are involved in the project, and new groups are being invited to join in. The evening will culminate in all performers and the audience coming together to sing a newly-commissioned work by composer Gavin Bryars, hosted by the Royal Opera House.
Good practice in the use of the arts with and for older people in residential care is celebrated in a new report supported by the Baring Foundation, the National Association of Activity Providers for Older People and the National Care Forum, an umbrella body for not-for-profit care. The report makes the case for the arts in care homes and how this is integral to the definition of excellence in social care. It includes conclusions from a 2011 survey, together with case studies from care homes providers and arts organisations, practical tips and a directory of resources and further information.
