Dancers in Belfast with learning and physical disabilities have worked with Queen’s University students and service users with mental health difficulties in a collaborative dance project. The project works with two integrated dance companies, Orbit Dance and Kompany Maine, created by Arts Care, a Northern Ireland arts and health charity. The dance troupes comprise service users with severe brain injury or physical and learning disability and the healthcare staff who care for them.
Without Walls, a consortium of eight UK arts festivals, will premiere nine new outdoor works that it has commissioned this year. Since its launch in 2006 the consortium has commissioned, supported and presented around 500 free outdoor performances from 39 established and emerging artists, attracting an audience of nearly 1.3 million people.

Eleven new residencies that aim to bring together artists and communities have been announced as part of Creative Scotland’s Innovation Fund. The projects include: £50,000 for ‘Leafing the Green’, a two-year writer’s residency working with residents of Aberdeen’s Torry area to explore environmental themes; £30,000 for a contemporary visual artist to work with residents in Glasgow South to increase their involvement in contemporary arts; and £50,000 for two artists to work with residents of Hillhead, Kirkintilloch, on contemporary sculpture projects.

The Charity Commission has issued guidance for charities covering the period between the announcement of an election and the date on which an election is held, to prevent charities unintentionally becoming embroiled in party politics. The guidance is intended to sit alongside other requirements, such as electoral law, which apply to charities and non-charities.

The Arts Council of Ireland has announced seven new members of Aosdána, the affiliation of creative artists in Ireland: Frances Harvey, Vona Groarke, Conor McPherson, Gráinne Mulvey, Sheila O’Donnell, Kevin Volans and Yvonne Farrell. Membership is by peer nomination and election and is limited to 250 living artists.
The Cultural Learning Alliance, which brings together the cultural sector to work with the education and youth sectors, has launched its website. The Alliance aims to promote cultural entitlement and to drive forward cultural learning to ensure that it continues to be a core value in children and young people’s educational, social and emotional development.

Mission Models Money is beginning work on a new research project to explore the financial resilience of the UK’s Arts and Cultural Sector. The research, ‘Capital Matters’, will focus on: the potential for expanding the range of different kinds of financial capital available; the development of the skills and knowledge needed to use them; and the revision of policy and infrastructure frameworks to enable the speedy evolution of both the above.

A new report from the Mayors of Manchester and Lewisham, ‘Putting the Frontline First’, sets out ways that local government can protect its frontline services. It recommends: focusing on the ‘customer’; making services more efficient; streamlining management and sharing expertise and best practice.

The Crescent Arts Centre has completed the multi-million pound restoration of its Belfast building. It reopened this month with a seven-day festival offering more than 100 free ‘taster’ classes and workshops including flamenco, puppetry, photography, belly dancing, storytelling, ballet and creative writing.
