National Portrait Gallery accused of nepotism over photography exhibition
The National Portrait Gallery is facing accusations of nepotism after holding an exhibition of photography by a large donor.
The gallery is showing portraits from the Legends series by Zoe Law, which features figures from the worlds of art, fashion, business and entertainment.
The Law Family Charitable Foundation – which both Zoe Law and her former husband Andrew were trustees of – was a major donor to the gallery’s recent £40m redevelopment.
Law resigned as a trustee during the couple’s divorce last year, but Andrew Law remains on the board.
The gallery is also acquiring Zoe Law’s portrait of Noel Gallagher for its permanent collection.
Cultural figures told The Guardian the exhibition was “difficult to defend” and “obviously unethical”.
A spokesperson for the National Portrait Gallery said that “the gallery’s ethics committee were consulted and agreed the donation from The Law Family Charitable Foundation”.
