Former British Museum contractor arrested after IT attack
A former contractor who had recently been dismissed by the British Museum has been arrested following an alleged IT attack over the weekend.
The Guardian reports that the former employee was able to get back into the building and shut down several systems including its ticketing platform, rendering the IT system that manages bookings for paid-for exhibitions unusable.
A British Museum spokesperson said: “An IT contractor who was dismissed last week trespassed into the museum and shut down several of our systems. Police attended and he was arrested at the scene.
“We are working hard to get the museum back to being fully operational but with regret our temporary exhibitions have been closed today [Saturday 25 January] and will remain so over the weekend – ticket holders have been alerted and refunds offered.”
The Met Police said man in his 50s was arrested on suspicion of burglary and criminal damage, and has since been bailed.
