England is set to move to step 4 of the reopening roadmap next month despite rising Covid case numbers.

New Health Secretary Sajid Javid said restrictions will not be lifted earlier than July 19 but they "must come to an end" then.

Theatres Trust Director Jon Morgan said the news places the sector in a difficult position since it is not yet assured that theatres will be able to reopen fully.

"This makes planning incredibly challenging for the theatre industry.

"What the theatre sector really needs at this moment is a commitment that events already found to be safe through the Events Research Programme, including indoor theatre, can reopen fully on July 19."
