Affordable artists spaces could be demolished and replaced by 34 apartments under plans lodged with Edinburgh City Council.

The former warehouse houses Rhubaba gallery and studios - one of the few permanent cultural venues in Leith. It was co-founded by Edinburgh College of Art graduates and is currently home to around 20 artists.

The council is said to be supportive of developers’ initial proposals but artists, locals and trustees have raised 850 objections in a recent campaign to save the building.

Rhubaba artist Jen Cuthill told The Scotsman the warehouse is "such an important space for community, motivation and support".

"Without it, Edinburgh would lose one of its only affordable studios, which would be heart breaking for anyone who lives in the city as an artist.”
