Boris Johnson is facing criticism after almost £100,000 of taxpayers’ money was spent on new art for Downing Street.

An unnamed painting by Cathy Wilkes was bought for £70,200 and four prints by photographer Willie Doherty purchased for £18,800k.

The works were paid for through the Government Art Collection fund, subsidised by donor contributions and taxpayer cash.

Downing Street said the “majority” came from donors but did not specify how much.

Labour MP Neil Coyle said Johnson “could not be more out of touch”.

“As his Government cuts Universal Credit and freezes frontline nurse/policy pay, Johnson has found more money to treat himself,” Coyle wrote on Twitter.
