A council in South Yorkshire is funding research into the future of a local theatre following concerns about its structural viability.

Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council will spend £25,000 to determine whether Rotherham Civic Theatre should be renovated or replaced.

The theatre opened in a converted church in March 1960. It is thought that substantial repairs are required to the building’s roof, and that other structural work is also needed.

As well as the building’s structural issues, the research will look at local demand for a performing arts venue and what kinds of performances and events are wanted by local audiences.

A financial strategy for the venue will also be developed as part of the study. Once completed, the conclusions of the research will be shared with the public and stakeholders prior to any decision on the venue’s future.
