Camden Arts Centre acquires 99-year building lease
Camden Arts Centre has secured a 99-year lease of its current Grade-II listed building.
For the last 23 years, the arts institution has leased out its current premises, owned by London Borough of Camden, on a peppercorn agreement.
With the terms of the agreement due to expire in 2027, the arts centre has announced it has secured a lease from the council following a successful fundraising campaign.
The campaign, which raised £1.9m, has secured “the future of the institution as a home for art, artists and audiences for the next 100 years” and ensures the continuation of its exhibitions, residencies and public and learning programmes, according to a statement from the arts centre.
“Securing the building at a time of deep uncertainty for the arts is a powerful testament to the integrity, resilience and cultural significance of Camden Art Centre,” commented chairman Guy Halamish.
“This is an extraordinary achievement for the charity and provides much-needed financial resilience, following significant recent cuts to our public funding,” added director Martin Clark.
“On the occasion of our 60th anniversary, I can think of no better way to both celebrate our past and look with confidence to our future.”
