In a late attempt to quell the storm of criticism and rumour that has swirled around since its closure was announced on 10 May (AP issue 146, 21 May), the Bristol Old Vic has offered its own explanation of events, blaming its deepening crisis on the increasingly poor condition of the Georgian building and a calamitous decline in ticket sales. Pointing to the extremely high box office targets needed to sustain its high-calibre autumn season, the Board said that the financial risks were simply too high.
The theatre also said that workforce safety could be threatened by poor electrical wiring, poor plumbing and asbestos. A wide-ranging strategy review will now take place in consultation with Arts Council England and Bristol City Council, aiming to secure a relevant, vibrant and successful theatre for the future.
