How cinema broadcasts have changed audience experiences of opera in the UK will be the subject of the first academic study of its kind, led by English Touring Opera and researchers at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. Broadcasting of opera is a recent trend in the UK where around 180 cinemas regularly broadcast the Met Opera Live in HD series.

Funded by Creativeworks London, the research will explore the appeal of opera broadcasts, the audience experience in comparison to live opera, and if the success of cinema broadcasts can be transferred to live opera to increase audience numbers. The research will take place between October and December, with results being published early in the New Year. Companies that screen opera cinema broadcasts are invited to participate in the research; John Holmes at English Touring Opera can be contacted for more information.
