HMRC has issued warning letters to 550 companies, in sectors including law, media and the performing arts, reminding them that employing unpaid interns as workers to avoid paying the national minimum wage is “against the law and exploitative”.

Interim findings from the union’s investigation into sexual harassment in theatre conclude at least three people should be present for auditions. Equity is also calling for theatres to have clear policies on bullying and harassment – and to demand them from visiting companies – and for employers to designate a ‘go-to’ person who is trained to deal with issues raised.

Playwright Abhishek Majumdar claims the British Council pressured the London theatre to drop a play about Tibet last year to avoid a negative reaction in China, where the theatre recently worked with 16 writers. A pre-Raphaelite painting depicting pubescent nymphs has been removed from display at Manchester Art Gallery and, in its place, visitors are being invited to share their reactions on post-it notes. The gallery said the move is intended to “prompt conversations about how we display and interpret artworks” and is a reaction to the ‘Time’s Up’ and ‘#MeToo’ movements.

Following a decision to reduce opening times at six of Edinburgh’s museums and galleries to just five days a week, visitor numbers have fallen by 21%, and retail and donation income is down 25%. Responding to the figures, Labour councillor Donald Wilson said: “We need to do something else”.
